Todd got assigned a poetry page and treated it like a crisis.

Sometimes a poetry assignment is just a poetry assignment. And sometimes it becomes evidence that Todd should never be left alone with a full pot of diner coffee.

Anna shares a one-off Earth-side entry from East Bay High. Mrs. Beasley kicks off a poetry unit and assigns the class to write a poem about something they care about. Anna finishes her draft early. Todd hits a wall, because “passion” is not a word he uses for himself.

Then homework night at Mel’s Diner happens. Todd drinks coffee like it is field rations, gets loud, and announces he will write an “Ode to Coffee” in front of half the dining room. A tourist couple in the next booth overhears. The wife, a retired English teacher, slips into teacher mode and helps Todd shape his ideas into a poem without changing his voice. Todd’s thank-you comes out the only way he knows how: direct, practical, and a little too generous.

This chapter is written in Anna’s conversational voice, addressed to the reader like a friend. It is funny, fast, and low-stakes, but it still lands on what the series cares about: competence, honesty, and quiet kindness.
